So, all new nokias will have only zeiss optics, or only new nokias will have zeiss optics?
  • boozed - Thursday, July 6, 2017 - link

All new Nokias will have Zeiss written on them and a lens from the same Asian factory as always.
  • Tadashi130 - Friday, July 7, 2017 - link

"upcoming Nokia-branded smartphones will use Zeiss-branded optics exclusively"
" Zeiss will be used on Nokia-branded devices exclusively"
I wonder why they weren't mentioned in one sentence instead of doing it like this. I can understand your confusion.
  • ddriver - Friday, July 7, 2017 - link

Nah, it was more of a rhetorical question, aimed to point out the ambiguity.
  • Gunbuster - Thursday, July 6, 2017 - link

"Nokia-branded smartphones will use Zeiss-branded optics exclusively" all I have seen is tricky wording like this. I think we'll see the Zeiss logo get emailed to the factory and they will "collaborate" on buying someones $10 optics over the $5 option. Then hit the phone with a $50 mark up for the Zeiss branding.
  • boozed - Thursday, July 6, 2017 - link

    You'll be a businessman yet!
  • CharonPDX - Thursday, July 6, 2017 - link

You mean some $2 optics over the $1 option. You're overestimating how much they'd spend on optics.
  • shabby - Thursday, July 6, 2017 - link

Because its the optics that make a great camera... thanks but i'll stick to the no name brand optics on my s8.
  • tuxfool - Thursday, July 6, 2017 - link

Not just, but they matter a lot.
  • shabby - Thursday, July 6, 2017 - link

Then i will imagine nokia will screw it up by using a cheap sensor and low end isp.
  • tuxfool - Thursday, July 6, 2017 - link

why would they? They never did in the past.
  • philehidiot - Thursday, July 6, 2017 - link

Remember though, this is not the Nokia of old. It's merely a company leveraging the brand. Nokia as we knew it is dead.
  • lilmoe - Thursday, July 6, 2017 - link

I've seen a teardown of one of the new Nokias. Not bad honestly. Very close to the old quality of Nokia, and better than those under Microsoft.
  • melgross - Friday, July 7, 2017 - link

Unless you’re an expert in these matters, there is little you can tell from a tear down. What are you looking for? Would you recognize different part quality? I doubt it.
  • hemedans - Friday, July 7, 2017 - link

    yes you can see
-instead of glue everything they used screw
-you cant bend them easly like iphone
-most reviewers agreed they have never tested durable phone like Nokia 6 in recent years

Not entirely true. They engulfed the majority of engineering talent from Nokia. Even the recent announcements state they had direct input from Nokia proper.

But this could become reminiscent of Lenovo buying IBM. It was a good start but eventually the quality faded and selling based on price alone caused IT departments to leverage their employers to switch to Dell and HP, both of which have gained market share since last year at Lenovo's expense.

Frankly, I'm surprised it took as long as it did. Lenovo has been making genuinely shitty laptops for years. I don't think I need to name models, because let's face it, half the crap with the Thinkpad nameplate on it these days is entirely undeserving. Rarely do models even bother meeting a single MIL-STD 810G specification where HP's Elitebook generally meet at least 8. Then there is the support, or lack there of, with Lenovo telling customers to go fuck themselves when their Thinkpad Yoga turns itself off when you put pressure on a certain part of the chassis or Thinkpad T400/T500 series USB ports literally cracking off inside the plug because they couldn't be bothered to use thermoplastic injection or or test the tolerances of the plug tension.

Anecdotal much? We're specifically discussing the current Nokia products. They're extremely affordable yet are built on very high standards. This discussion has nothing to do with Lenovo. Or is it because they're both Chinese? I've also never heard of the usb thing on the t series. I know the thinkpad edge series sucks, but t series?? Hmmmm.
  • Gunbuster - Friday, July 7, 2017 - link

"extremely affordable" is a stretch don't you think? A similar BLU VIVO 5 is $160 compared to a Nokia 6 at $180. They probably roll out of the same Foxcon factory... ODM: Write a check get a phone.
  • ajp_anton - Friday, July 7, 2017 - link

Neither Nokia nor HMD are chinese, so I don't know who your "both" is including besides Lenovo.
  • melgross - Friday, July 7, 2017 - link

Again, how do you know what standards these are using? They are smartphones that are about as good as other smartphones in their price class, nothing more, nothing less.

That's the Asian business way - they send you a dozen great samples, than you sign a supplier contract, lay off your workers and outsource everything, so you Asian partners can start shipping you billions of $ ultimate crap that has nothing in common with the first samples :) :). It does take at least several years for the contract to expire though, and the end users to abandon you, to realize that selling expensively worthless stuff is not the way to conquer American market...

    "Nokia to Licence Zeiss Trademark"
  • Flunk - Thursday, July 6, 2017 - link

    Yup
  • boozed - Thursday, July 6, 2017 - link

Or perhaps even "Nokia Licencee to also Become Zeiss Licencee"
  • xype - Friday, July 7, 2017 - link

That’s more accurate. Nokia and Zeiss are only name brands with these products. Doesn’t mean it won’t be any good, we’ll have to wait and see.
  • Gunbuster - Friday, July 7, 2017 - link

They should go for the Nascar approach and get even more Licence and cert logos to slather on! Perhaps B&O for audio, Get it THX certified, HDR10?
  • Tams80 - Friday, July 7, 2017 - link

Don't forget Dolby Digital! Old Nokia's used to have it as well, so it'll fit in perfectly.
  • azrael- - Friday, July 7, 2017 - link

Will this be like Huawei and Leica? I guess so...
  • melgross - Friday, July 7, 2017 - link

Quite frankly, I don’t see this as being as big a deal as they present it as being. When it comes to multi thousand dollar lenses, they Zeiss is one of the best. But when it comes to the $5 lenses used in smartphone cameras, they offer no advantage.

They are also no known for software of this kind, nor are they known for LCD or OLED screen technologies. Neither are they know for sensor design.

This is the same thing as using the name Leica or Schneider on a smartphone lens. There has been no evidence that these cameras take pictures that are better because of them.

I’m skeptical that there will be any significant improvements with the partnership.
  • Tams80 - Friday, July 7, 2017 - link

Unless they are prepared to go with a big camera module again, then there is no way they are going to improve image quality much over the competition. They can then choose to make it a hump, or make the rest of the phone deeper, but the module will still need to be there.

As I understand it, old Nokia's (read Nokia) past agreement with Zeiss really helped them with the 41 MP PureView sensor, as that actually needed lenses that weren't readily available.
  • Shadow7037932 - Monday, July 10, 2017 - link

I'd take a thicker phone with larger battery and better camera.
  • Tams80 - Wednesday, July 12, 2017 - link

So would I, but don't tell the writers here. I doubt they'd agree. ;-)
  • nikon133 - Monday, July 10, 2017 - link

I'd be happy if they improve on camera fitted in Lumia 950XL... while it was Microsoft branded phone, I expect that it still is based on underlying Nokia design. 20MP with good, OIS lens by Zeis and what appears to be quality sensor under it... plenty for phone, imho. And it doesn't add to phone's bulk.
