AMD Launches The Radeon HD 6950 1GB

Today AMD is launching the long-awaited 1GB version of the Radeon HD 6950. For reasons we can't really delve in to, the NDA for the 6950 is expiring here at 4am PDT, however we're not ready to talk about the 6950 1GB quite yet. We'll be back in a few hours with a full explaination, but in the mean time we can say that performance is virtually identical to the 2GB card throughout our test suite at 1920x1200 and 1680x1050. It's only at 2560x1600 and under Eyefinity that we see the 2GB card make a name for itself.

The top one is a 6950 2Gig retail card. The bottom one is a 6950 1Gig engineering sample. I've noticed engineering samples still having the ATI logo before.ImSpartacus - Tuesday, January 25, 2011 - link
I'm glad AT could summarize the results of the 1GB review. However, is anyone surprised? 1GB is plenty until you pass 1080p.I honestly wonder why the 6950 wasn't offered in 1GB from launch. Will this question be answered in the review?
I see that the 1GB version is slightly cheaper on Newegg. Did AMD want to have a justification to keep the price up?
If it can creep below the $250, AMD will have a winner.

Really? That's awesome.I haven't been following graphics lately (the ol' 4890 still chugs through 1080p Source mods, lol). Newegg has a few 1GB versions for a little north $250. If they fall to $240, that would be great!

I'm just happy we got a taste.I think the review was summed up quite nicely. If you are gaming at resolutions greater than 1080p, you already have the budget to get a 2GB graphics card. Otherwise, 1GB is fine.

the pricing of graphics cards is getting really attractive these days..the prices of HD5850/70/GTX480 had basically kept unchanged at $260/$370/$500 since 09'Q4, but now, it seems just like a free performance upgrade with 6950/570/580 replacing their price tag respectively :)
